Hi :)My pup Phoenix is a Husky Border Collie cross, we would like to walk her on a "Halty"I wondered if anyone had any tips about getting her used to this kind of leash? She is still very young (not even home yet) so we will be starting from the ground up(rather than having to get her used to something new)But i wanted to know the right way to get a dog used to wearing somthing on her face and at what age should we start this? Thanks!~A
I have never and will never use a halty. Those dogs I have seen with them on I have seen them slip up the face close to or even partialy covering the eyes and they do not allow for maximum control. I have had clients that used them but I would never put one on any dog I have trained. I would recomend a choke chain over a halty or even a gentle leader, better yet one of the Ilusion collars that Ilusion Millan created. A halty is used to control a dogs mouth if they are known to be a biter. I would prefer using a muzzle over a halty in that case. now I may get arguments over this but in my humble opinion they are not a good colar.

unfortunately,I love my halti. I rescued a lab retreiver mix from a frien and he had been in a shelter for awhile. I tried choke chain, also bought an Illusion collar none worked, and I tried alot. When I got the halti he resonded immediatley. It is not tight around his mouth, it pulls his head toward you if he tries to go ahead. I only put it on him when we walk. It is NOT to be left on otherwise. I put a cookie through the opening when I first put it on hom. very important that it is on properly because if they get out of it they will know they can. I also researched on internet before buying good luck.
tedoggirl:...it pulls his head toward you if he tries to go ahead. I only put it on him when we walk.
I should note, I also do NOT recommend choke chains. As I have mentioned on other posts, they require stronger corrections, are harder to administer corrections with, don't distribute the pressure evenly around the neck, are harder to keep at the top of the neck, and can accidentally pinch the skin on a dog, causing pain. The prong collar is a much more effective and humane (yes, humane) tool to use than the choke collar.
I'm curious, why is it that you want to walk her on a halti?
Thanks everyone for your opionons/tips! :)I wanted to use a Halti because the woman that I will be getting pup from owns Huskies and highly recommends that I use them with Phoenix as she says they are excellent for walking Huskies.Still not sure whether or not I'll use one. Thanks for all your help:)
No problem. Good luck with your pup and keep us updated! :)
I think since you are getting a puppy you have an opportunity to try a few different things to see what works for your pup. My rescue dog Braden has some major issues and the halti works for both of us right now. i am hoping to be able to use a different collar but sometimes it takes baby steps and patience. Just remember to have fun and not to over think it. good luck. here is a pic of my new pack member.
Good looking dog there!
Beautiful dog!:)I wondered if I do decide to use the Halti, what should i start with? Should it be the first thing I use or should we try a regular leash/collar and then use the Halti later on if needed? The reason i even thought to use one is because the owner of the mother and father suggested it because that's what she uses with her Husky.:)~LIB
Hi Lib, I think you should start with a collar and teach some basics. I had a dog from a puppy and walked him all the time and eventually he would walk behind me without leash. I think it is so individual. You have great opportunities to teach him your way. Every dog is different. He might love the walk and you won't have any problems in that area. It is a learning experience. so do what feels right for you and remember to have fun. good luck theresa
Ditto what tedogirl said. Start with the regular leash/collar and if it seems that the pup is not responsive to that, move to something else. Also remember that it will take LOTs of time, patience, and practice to get that "perfect" walk.
Okay :DThanks Everyone! You've helped a lot!
