Things get very interesting when you have more than one dog. I really enjoy watching dogs interact with each other and co-exist in the same space.

Some of you may remember my dilemma over the summer with two (not so good) pack leaders and their dogs. Things are better off today as they have improved, but for a couple nights, I have the good fortune of puppy-sitting! Pictured below are my dog Jewell (3 yrs), Brutus the pitbull (4 yrs), and Chico the yorkie (8 months). It's only 10:30 in the a.m. but I've had an awesome day so far with them! Enjoy the pics - I'll have more later!

Ahhh good times, GP!

Keep the pics coming!

P.S. I'm leaning towards a second dog myself...although I'm a little hesistant, but when I see your Jewell and Brutus interact together thru your pics, I can see the wonderful possibilities =0  Much to think about, I think!

Much happiness,

LB

Oh I love the pic of the pit bull and yorkie play-bowing to each other!!

I gather that you did not adopt in the end (or as of yet), but continue to look after your neighbor's pit bull?  The dynamics of a changing pack are amazing and stirke a chord with me.  I bore everyone silly with tales of "what this dog did with that dog when the other dog was there...".

LB, getting another dog will certainly change the dynamic of your pack, as I am sure you are well aware.  I don't know your pack history either, so apologies if I'm not helpful.  My friend adopted her dog as a pup 2 years ago, and it changed her life completely, and for the better.  She seesaws now about getting another dog.  On the yes side, she has had such a positive experience and there are so many that need homes.  On the no side, she has such a perfect relationship with her dog she doesn't want to alter it.

I do sometimes look back at the time when I had "The One Perfect Dog" with nostalgia.  But the dogs that have come our way since needed us, needed a home and, while I haven't always been the best pack leader for them, I do believe that they have been happier, healthier & more balanced.  They have all certainly made me more balanced!

Ah, no worries Braggi =)  I don't think I will, at least until Lilly is a year or so old, just enough to say that she's still a puppy but mature enough to know when to listen =)

LB,

I know what you mean.  I desperately would love to have a 2nd dog myself.  But Aztec and I aren't sufficiently trained or prepared for a second one just yet.  I have so many breeds of dogs I'd love to have before I die (sadly I have to rule out many as incompatible with my life. Sniff.) plus I desperately want another lab.

But that's just incentive for me to keep working at things with Aztec.  Then maybe one day it will be feasible to add another dog to the family.

Ryan, is this the wee yorkie that myself, tom and you spoke about, the one your girlfriend wanted but you didn't think you would bond?

If so, look at your pic of the four amigo's walking away! I hope this finds you well Ryan, I have missed your input.;)

peace and light my friend

Thanks to all for your replies!

Jofi, this is the yorkie from our conversations in the summer. Chico is an interesting dog when you get to know him. I have grown to like him. I guess I was a little (a lot) more concerned about the image of my big dog and then this tiny guy. But I'm over that.

You all should have seen the looks from passers-by as I walked the three of them on my own a little while ago! I was in control of all of them! Lol.

My neighbor and the pitbull have since moved to New York (a couple hours drive from Atlantic City). But she has had to make a couple trips down here and had to see her mother this week. Since her mother doesn't like dogs, Brutus is staying with me for the week! Plus, my fiancee is taking a final exam tomorrow, so to minimize the distraction, I offered to watch Chico .

One challenging part for Jewell is dealing with play time when Brutus isn't interested. Chico is often a willing participant, but, being 10 times his size, it can get dangerous quickly! In the open space of the beach, it's even more dangerous when Jewell and Brutus are running full speed chasing each other. Chico wants to join, but he may get trampled!

Anyway, it's been a great day. I've realized they are all dogs no matter the size or shape. As long as they have a leader, they'll fall in line.

I had two dogs at first with no plans to get a third. I was happy with that, plus since my dalmatian molly didn't like other dogs, i didn't think it was a good idea. but then my sis ter decided she was going to get a puggle puppy. i was really worried at first. When she got him I let my lab zeek meet him, and they were fine. Then I let molly. I was scared. molly seemed intrested, but I still didn't let her to close. Then a few days later my sister told me to quite being afaid and let molly lose with the new puppy quinn. So I did. Molly loved the puppy!!! she treated it like her own. now the puppy is one yr. and all three of the dogs play and have no problem. Life would not be the same without him. So if you do ever decide to get a puppy, it could be a good thing. But like you and everyone else said, it might be good to wait. I just wanted to let you know how a new dog turned out at my house :D

Don't you love the looks people gives you. I walked 11 dogs with my sister, all of them in contol, even the dominant-aggressive ones, and it was great. people's eyes get huge!!! they always ask how I get them to walk in a line, and I tell them "Cesar" :)
Thats what I think too. Dogs are dogs. I hate when people tell me pitbulls shouldn't be trusted. I've walked many pitbulls, and as long as I was in charge, I had no problem. I wish everyone could see that.
I'm happy that things are going well for you, even though I have no idea what was wrong before :). your pack looked great!! I love the pixs too!!!

Something about my dog, Jewell, when it comes to male dogs...

I don't know this for sure, but it seems that, despite Jewell being a spayed female, male dogs are still interested in mating her. I thought dogs knew when the opposite sex was fixed. Chico, the yorkie (8 months), was clearly more interested in Jewell than anything else else that was going on for the time he spent with me. He had no interest in the other male dog in the room, Brutus. Chico would clearly try to mount Jewell at times, even though she's 10 times his size. Regardless of the corrections, all day long he would try anyway. Thankfully, Jewell never got too frustrated with him and would just push him away.

***Side note... Chico stays with another female dog, a pitbull, and has apparently never behaved this way around her. Is it something about Jewell?

Is 8 months around the time when in-tact males are reaching their initial testosterone peak? And also, do dogs know that the opposite sex is fixed?

Ryan , I would have said with her being fixed it is more a dominance thing then, it happens with two females when pecking order is being worked out, as long as you keep a handle on the situation, allow her to chastise him if she feels necessary but watch the intensity. Don't worry my friend it is normal behaviour.

peace and light Ryan

Cool, thanks. I definitely supervise closely and let Jewell handle it as long as she doesn't get too aggressive with it. Most times, after pushing him away a few times, she'll just get up and move. Then he chases her intently trying to get her attention again.

When Chico wasn't bothering Jewell, he was stretched out chillin...

more pics from the 3 dog sleepover...

As an amateur photographer, I prefer natural moments. This is why I don't try to stage my pictures...

I was slightly (by slighty I mean highly) annoyed trying to keep all three still!

Here they are napping during the day, and then in the evening preparing for nighttime sleeping...

Chico was still quite alert and took a little more time to completely settle for the night!

The first picture, the dogs. What do you see body language wise?

The second picture, again what do you see................. can you see the dogs energies? tell me what you see? think about what you see and then think of the dogs energies and see if you are correct in putting the two together........... good quiz my friend;)
