I was watching an awful cable TV show called "Toddlers in Tiaras" or similar and was shocked to see the prizes for the supreme beauty queens were 3 tiny puppies.
All the little girls wanted them of course. The girls were aged 3 and up, and the puppies looked to be no more than 5 weeks old.
What in the world are we creating?
We live in a world of commodities jen, that is powered by money.
Jen,
I don't know what's crueler - giving away pups (too young!) to just anyone, or anyone putting their child in a beauty pageant...
The more I see what our society has become, the more I love my dog, and my virtual pack of course!!
What are we creating? Good question.
In the human juveniles these pageants teach (create/reinforce) superficiality, overly competitive and judgemental behavior, low self-esteem, skewed world views, unhealthy body image, hyper-sexuality (as related to outward appearance) and unrealistic expectations of self and familial relationships. These girls will have a very difficult time, if ever, overcoming the wontan destruction of their sense of self worth as connected to their outward appearance. Their inner beauty and individual worth or "specialness"doesn't stand a chance.
In the canine juveniles, the fact that these babies are being given as prizes teaches the canines (some) humans are not to be trusted, and teaches the juviline humans there is little value in the life of the canine, setting off a lifetime of unhealthy, unbalanced behaviors in both canine and human juveniles.
I absolutely abhor beauty pageants, and think the pageants for little girls borders on criminal. Anyone ever watch "Little Miss Perfect"? That is a freak parade if I ever saw one. Where is the Department of Child Welfare?
Disgusting.
Colleen
Poor babies -- human and canine! Why 3 puppies? All for one contestant of one for 3 winners? Either way it's not an appropriate prize. How about a Dora the Explorer backpack?
It was 3 puppies for 3 winners - I just can't believe that anyone thinks a puppy makes a good prize for anything!
I also can't believe I was watching that show!
Kind of like watching a train wreck -- you couldn't tear your eyes away! Even if the children's parents agreed to it, it's not matching the dog's energy to that of the family. We've all seen how that turns out on DW. It would be interesting to follow up and see how many of the puppies end up in a shelter before their first year is out. Just from comments people make when they see my dog, they don't know what it takes. Yes, she's sweet and mellow now, but A LOT of work went into making her that way!!! Age and temperament certainly help, but puppies don't come "pre-loaded," you have to mold them. Arrrggghhh, it make me crazy to think about!
because it also comes from such flakes like paris hilton and others lugging around these little dogs in little cute designer bags because their a ojbect that to those people has no feelings or anything and is nothing more than a rock and when they turn mean and vicious their threw away and ending up in a shelter as you said or somewhere at a center like the one the tia torres has as shown on pitbulls and paroles a good show about how society treats the castways like trash nothing more and the fact that people recoil if god forbid they mention they was in jail or prison. THANK GOD FOR PEOPLE LIKE CESAR AND TIA TORRES. both of which are trying to help change how america views the so called useless dogs. Tia torres owns and runs the largest pit bull rescue center in NA with the hel of her daugthers and other people while she's struggling to hold onto her husband's dream who is in jail because of one of the paroles he hired had a stolen car on a piece of land that adjoined their land so they instead of trying to find the real person who stole it the cops instead took her husband to jail and it had aired part of his trial and one of the police officer flat out refused to remove his handcuffs calling him a flight risk. over a stupid car that someone else stole.
